Chapter 69 Chapter 69 Aden I wait for the door of my office to click shut before reaching towards the top drawer of my desk. I remove a gold keychain from my pocket, flip to the old-fashioned one that matches the antique desk, and set it into the lock. The tape recorder is inside the top drawer as always, and I smile when I see that it's still running.
I press the Stop button and then rewind, waiting a few seconds before pressing Stop again.
Then I press play and listens, carefully, to the entire conversation between Remington and Brooklyn. Tto see if Brooklyn is a little liar, or if I can trust her.
I feel my body and my wolf relax as the conversation plays out. Brooklyn toldexactly what was said in exactly the right order.
Not only does she have a good memory, but she didn't leave anything out. Good. This means my trust in her can remain.
When I hear Brooklyn hesitate after Remington asks if she and Hudson have been intimate, I realize I'm smiling. Remington was pleased by her silence, suggesting a negation, and I can't help but feel the same, even though it's all wrong for the alliance.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtSelfishly, I want her. My wolf is drawn to her, and he wants to make sure nobody else has her instead of me. Not even my own flesh and blood.
The smug happiness insideis checked, though, as I start to wonder more about what's getting in their way. They're young people who claim to be in love, their bedrooms basically next door to each other.
Young shifters like that, they should be all over each other, giving in to their animal instincts.
If I were in Hudson's place, at that tin my life, I'd be sneaking into Brooklyn's room every night. Hell, I'd be sneaking in there every chance I got.
But Hudson isn't. And once again I try to ignore the sneaking suspicion that I know why.
I sigh now, putting my concerns off for another day. I'm just about to press Stop on the tape recorder as the conversation comes to a close.
There is no reason to worry over this. I can trust Brooklyn.
I pause, though, when I hear something strange in Brooklyn's voice.
She hesitates. Then she says: "Um, no. I don't have anything to give you." Here voice was strained. I take my hand off the Stop button.
My wolf perks up. Something isn't right.
"Not...right now. At least," Brooklyn finishes. Again, strained. Again...loaded.
I growl, listening with only half an ear as the tape continues to roll, turning mostly to footsteps and silence.
Not right now? What the hell did that mean? Does Brooklyn expect to have something to give Remington in the near future? I'm already walking out the door.
Perhaps little Brooklyn is playing a gafter all.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmIn the hall, I snap my fingers at a guard on watch.
"Get two more guys," I say. "We're going upstairs."
The guard nods, not questioning my directive, and heads off to collect heldlands who he dana's head I head up the stairs.
I open the door to Brooklyn's room, looking around carefully. She keeps her space neat, but not obsessively se. The bed is nicely made, but there are books and other items left around the room.
I raise my nose to the air and breathe in deep. Her scent is everywhere, I resist bleurgite - and to close my eyes as it washes over me.
When my guys arrive, I give a command without hesitating.
"Toss it," "I order. "The whole place. Anything strange, I want to see it don't want a single corner untouched." Content bevelhet The guards nod and start tearing the room apart.
