Isaac’s phone buzzed out of the blue.
In the quiet hospital room, the ringtone was particularly jarring.
Isaac picked it up and saw Shona’s name flash on the screen.
He frowned, standing up to step out of the room.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Salter, sorry to bother you at this hour.” Shona’s voice sounded weak.
“What’s up?”
“The team told me everything’s going smoothly, so I thought I’d let you know in case you are worried. I’ll try to keep the engagement party small, but there’s no avoiding the
public gossip.”
The sound of the New Year bells rang out, waking Brittany.
The spot next to her was already empty Brittany propped herself up, rubbing her eyes. A strange sense of unease settled in her heart.

As she entered, she heard footsteps outside.
“Ms. Dustin?”

of the bathroom, the nurse was gone.
Brittany assumed she was looking for her, so she went to the nurse’s station to ask
Just as she got close, she heard the nurses talk.
“Wasn’t Mr. Salter supposed to be engaged to Shona? Why is he still visiting Ms. Dustin?”
“He probably can’t let go of Ms. Dustin, she’s so pretty Shona can’t hold a candle to Ms. Dustin.”
Brittany’s ears rang as if something had shattered
They were saying Isaac was getting engaged to Shona?
Brittany trembled violently. She instinctively steadied herself against the wall, a sharp pain spreading through her chest.
She never thought she could still feel that pain. She thought she had given up.
But little did she know, Isaac could still do something even more heart wrenching!
He told her that he would never be with anyone else.
All that, he got engaged to Shona.
What a joke!
Thank God she saw through it all early on. That marriage felt like a surreal dream!
The nurses’ gossip continued.
Brittany returned to her bed, feeling a sharp pain in her abdomen.
She covered her eyes with her hand, and after a long while, tears started to fall.
