“No, save your money, sweetheart. There will be plenty for you to spend it on in the future.”
Willa did not wish to burden her daughter Kari, nor did she want to be an unnecessary expense. “Get some rest,
dear,” she said, and she drifted to sleep

After Willa was asleep, Kari quietly left.
She ventured into another room. “Brittany, are you awake?” She asked, knocking lightly on Brittany’s door.

Kari entered, closing the door behind her. She checked it twice before she allowed her shoulders to relax. There

Brittany poured her a warm glass of milk. “What’s wrong?” She asked, noting Kari’s troubled expression.
Kari shook her head, accepting the milk. She took a small sip before saying, “Brittany, tomorrow…”
“Still nervous?” Brittany interrupted. The sight of Kari’s pale face was all the answer she needed. “Relax, Kari. You
and Nathan haven’t been together long, but you know how well he treats you. And now that you’re getting married,
nothing will change: Your life will only improve.”
Kari wished it were that simple.
After finishing her milk, she leaned against Brittany’s leg and closed her eyes. “Brittany, I need to rest.”
Brittany hummed in understanding, gently stroking Kari’s hair. “Stay with me tonight,” she offered.
After they both bathed, they settled into bed. But Kari found herself tossing and turning, sleep eluding her while
Brittany was already fast asleep.
In the end, Kari slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Brittany. She returned to her own room, where she found a
figure sitting in the dark. Just the sight of his silhouette was enough to send chills down her spine.
“You… Why are you here again?”
The man looked up. “Shouldn’t a brother bring a wedding present for his sister?”
Kari bit her lip, holding back a gasp. The man was Ronald Malone, the adopted son of the Malone family.
Years ago, he had been sent to prison for assault. Kari never imagined he would be free, especially not now, on the
eve of her wedding.
“Ronald, you were the one who committed a crime. I’ve never wronged you…” Kari instinctively tried to flee.
But Ronald, a well-known troublemaker with a background in martial arts, was quick to grab her. He pinned her

“Ronald, I’ve always seen you as a brother. Please, just leave,” she pleaded. “I’m about to get married. I will never
have feelings for you.”
Ronald stiffened at her words. His gaze turned predatory, and Kari felt cold fear spike through her.
“Ronald, please. For the sake of my mother’s kindness towards you, can you just let me go?”
Ronald had changed. He was once her best friend, her brother, but he became possessive and cruel somewhere
along the line. His eyes burned with a dangerous heat, and he forbade her from interacting with any other men.
When she was seventeen, he even picked a fight with a boy who had shown interest in her.
