Chapter 96 Sorely Mistaken
The guest list was finalized the day before.
Hazel went to ask Harlan for the list and brought it back to show Isolde.
Isolde took a look and couldn’t help but say that Prudence was really bold in her invitations.
Aveline, Margaret, and the Marchioness of Greystone had all been invited to attend.
Margaret was to be expected. She would definitely come.

After all, despite the broken engagement, no matter how the outside world speculated, she had to do something
to show everyone that the two families hadn't fallen out, and it also served as a form of respect to the Duke.
Isolde was more surprised by the arrival of the Marchioness of Greystone.
Accompanying the Marchioness was the rather spoiled Princess Bourbon.
However, Princess Sadie was not on the list.
Of course, Isolde knew that only one of the two princesses could come, as the Marquis of Greystone’s household
only had one princess and had never had two.
However, Harlan had told her that Prudence had invited both princesses.
If only Princess Bourbon had arrived, Prudence would not be too pleased.
Isolde set the list down, feeling a bit uneasy.
She had always wanted to meet the Marchioness of Greystone.
She felt that the Marchioness knew a lot about her mother.
Over the years, she had tried to gather information about her mother, asking about what kind of person she was,
what she looked like, her character, and how she handled things. But what she knew was limited.
Although she had sent her men to look for the maids and servants who had attended to her mother back then,
there had been no news so far.
Worried that Isolde might cause strouble, Geoffrey had specifically asked Harlan to talk to her, advising her
to be more restrained the next day.
Isolde simply smiled and dismissed the matter.
The next morning, Isolde got up and began preparing herself. Hazel asked if she would wear the headpiece that
Prudence had sent. Isolde replied, “Just leave the headpiece where it is. Don’t touch it unless necessary; they
might want to take it back later.”
Hazel chuckled. “How do you know so well?”
“She's always like this. It's meant to show her generosity and magnanimity, but do you really think she would

then find a reason to take it back? How do you know she would do that? You've never really spent twith her,
have you?”
Although Isolde had returned from the countryside and had never met Prudence, she was quite familiar
with her methods.
Isolde merely smiled and said nothing.
There was no need to lie to her own people. Sometimes, silence was the best answer.
Though she hadn't received many jewelry since returning from the countryside, Isolde had been gifted a box by.
She hadn't purchased much for herself, but Doug had sent over a chest of fine items. Just picking one at random,
it was far more luxurious than anything Prudence had given her.
Moreover, Aveline had also sent sgifts, so now Isolde truly had no shortage. It was just that she hadn't worn
them before.
She wore a moon-white silk chiffon gown with cloud patterns and embroidered peonies. On her feet were
embroidered shoes with pearl-tipped toes. Her hair was styled in a high bun, held in place with a white jade
hairpin and a gold tassel with southern pearls. Although the hairpiece might seem too formal for an unmarried
woman, it was just right for her, as she was a County Princess.
Her makeup was light, with the eyebrows slightly lifted, the arch of her brow enhancing her natural charm. Her
bright eyes and perfect smile made her look strikingly beautiful and captivating.
“You're amazing when you're dressed up.” Hattie and Hazel were dumbfounded.
Isolde looked at herself in the mirror, deep in thought, and said, “Everyone says | look like my mother, but |
wonder how much we actually resemble each other?”
She had heard that her mother used to dress this way, using the hairpin, the silk chiffon, and the bun.
She wanted to give Prudence a surprise.
“Miss, have you ever seen a portrait of your mother?” Hattie asked.
Isolde said, “No!”
Hazel leaned in and said, “I heard from someone in the mansion that the Duke of Blackmoor has a portrait of
her, but it’s kept in a drawer in the study, and it has a key.”
Isolde quietly made a note of it.
Once she finished getting dressed, Isolde headed out accompanied by Hattie and Hazel
Prudence was seated in the main hall, waiting for the guest to cand pay their respects.
Isolde saw her from a distance. Though far away, she could make out Prudence’s kind, benevolent smile, with
her children and grandchildren gathered around her in a harmonious, cheerful scene.
Isolde strode forward.
The kind smile on Prudence’s face froze. She lifted her gaze and stared at Isolde for a while, her eyes reflecting
both shrewdness and displeasure.
“Grandma!” Isolde called out as she approached, her expression respectful, as expected, given the “teaching”

Prudence slowly smiled. “Hmm, you look very good. Why aren’t you wearing the headpiece | sent you
yesterday?”
Isolde smiled and replied, “Since it was a gift from you, | couldn't bring myself to wear it. I'm keeping it as a
treasure.”
“Silly child,” Prudence said, her gentle smile returning. “I gave it to you, so you should wear it.” But, the smile
was insincere, merely a formality.
The Duke of Blackmoor, however, was quite relieved, fearing that Isolde’s sharp attitude might cause an
unpleasant scene.
Priscilla smiled as she stepped forward and gently took Isolde’s hand, saying warmly, “My dear, you've dressed
up so beautifully.”
“Everyone says | resemble my mother, but | wonder if that’s true,” Isolde replied.
Priscilla paused for a moment, then answered, “There is a slight resemblance.”
Nicole then stepped forward, took Isolde’s hand with sincerity, and said, “Isolde, | apologize on behalf of Martha.
She is still young and doesn’t understand, please don’t hold it against her.”
Isolde smiled and looked at the graceful Nicole. “Of course not. Please don’t say that.”
“That's good!” Nicole heaved a sigh of relief.
She genuinely hoped that Isolde and Martha would get along well.
She was already eighteen, and the pressing matter was finding a suitable marriage. If the sisters were not on
good terms, word would eventually get out, which would indirectly affect her reputation.

Isolde looked into a pair of deep, thoughtful eyes, and saw a handsface wearing a soft smile.
“Clark!” Isolde greeted.
In the past, the only person who treated her well in this family was Clark..
Clark, the eldest son of Vance had been adopted into the main branch of the family, so in a way, he was her
older brother.
However, after Matilda gave birth to a son, Prudence called him back to live with his biological father.
His biological mother had passed away early, and he grew up under the care of Priscilla. Though Priscilla
appeared kind and generous on the surface, she was actually sharp-tongued and harsh behind closed doors. As
a result, he had never truly had an easy life.
Prudence had always valued the legitimate heirs and looked down upon the illegitimate ones. From a young age,
Clark had known that he would spend his life in the shadows of his legitimate younger brother, living as a
support to the heir.
Clark was essentially just a shadow of the Duke of Blackmoor.

However, he was even more foolish, never once thinking of his own future or interests.
Isolde’s gaze shifted to the youngest son of Vance, Braden.

Braden had delicate features, fair skin, red lips, and white teeth, and his face was even more refined and
youthful than most women’s. Sitting arrogantly, he sneered coldly when he caught Isolde’s
gaze.
Isolde smiled lightly, thinking to herself that if Prudence expected Braden to carry on the Langley family line, she
was sorely mistaken.
